In the heart of the Ravenna plain, along Viale dei Lombardi 53 in Savio di Ravenna, stands B&B La Manzona, a farmhouse deeply rooted in a land where nature, history, and memory are closely intertwined.
The historic core of Savio stretches along the course of the Savio River, which marks the natural boundary between the municipalities of Ravenna and Cervia. This area is defined by a landscape of great environmental charm, just a short distance from the Bevano River Mouth, a protected area within the Po Delta Park, where the meeting of fresh and brackish waters creates a unique, delicate ecosystem.
The farmhouse, dating back to the late 1800s, therefore sits in a landscape setting of outstanding value, protected by strict environmental and historic-artistic safeguards: the Po Delta Park’s Nulla Osta, the binding opinion of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini, as well as the technical assessment by Ravenna’s Territorial Safety and Civil Protection Service within the Hydrogeological Risk Plan. These acknowledgements confirm the importance of the territorial context in which La Manzona is set.
Savio is not only nature, but also the stage for significant episodes in Italian history. In 1849, during the famous “trafila” following the fall of the Roman Republic, Giuseppe Garibaldi found refuge in a farmhouse in the area, leaving an indelible mark on local memory.
In the 1920s, the area became known for the Circuito del Savio, a car and motorcycle race held between 1923 and 1927. Right here, on 17 June 1923, Enzo Ferrari achieved his first victory as a driver at the wheel of an Alfa Romeo. On that occasion he met the parents of aviator Francesco Baracca, who suggested he adopt their son’s symbol—the famous prancing horse—destined to become a worldwide icon of motorsport.
Even place names tell the story of the area: Via dei Lombardi recalls ancient landholding and migratory ties between Romagna and Lombardy. Today it is a strategic road axis linking the hinterland to the Ravenna coast, keeping alive Savio’s role as a place of passage and meeting.
